Working with the nonprofit organization, Cardz for Kidz, this quarter DePaul students created handmade cards in their Spanish classes, in hopes of brightening a sick child's day. The hands-on lesson allows students to apply their translation skills and improve language proficiency, all while giving back to society.

"I Remember: Chicago Veterans of War" weaves together the memories of 50 veterans of World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Bosnia, Iraq and Afghanistan. Throughout the book, each veteran speaks in a series of anonymous "I remember" statements labeled by a number rather than a name, a structure that foregrounds the similarities of all wars.

The Chicago Tribune's Blue Sky Innovation reports that Chicago-based BCV, a hospitality-focused social media manager, monitors social media 24/7 for its hospitality clients to learn what guests like in order to personalize future visits. "If you can find something that differentiates yourself, that's going to give you a significant competitive advantage," says Nicholas Thomas, director of DePaul's Center for Hospitality Research and Education.

Singles' Day in China, Black Friday and Cyber Monday in the U.S. are engineered holiday trends that impact consumers, and use marketing and business tactics to sell items and influence shoppers. "Singles' Day is something that has evolved. Chinese companies are smart and have used this shopping phenomenon to their advantage to capitalize on selling items online," entrepreneurship expert Patrick J. Murphy tells China Radio International.
