No response was more fitting than the standing ovation and surprise flutes of champagne which followed the Nov. 2 announcement that pre-construction for the new School of Music building would soon begin. The Rev. Dennis H. Holtschneider, C.M., president of DePaul University, shared the news with the School of Music during its faculty and staff meeting Monday afternoon.

This year, nearly 5,000 DePaul students were awarded an estimated grant through the State of Illinois’ Monetary Award Program. Because the state has not yet put a budget in place for the 2015-16 fiscal year there is no appropriation to allow the state to pay these grants. The university strongly encourages all faculty, staff and students to contact their state representatives and the governor’s office, urging them to fund MAP today.

Pre-construction work is set to begin this week for a new School of Music building on DePaul University's Lincoln Park Campus. The design of the 185,000-square-foot facility by Chicago architectural firm Antunovich Associates, Inc., is dedicated to music teaching and performance. The university's board of trustees gave approval Oct. 30 to begin the project.

Students from DePaul 's School of Cinematic Arts are part of the "homegrown team" working on popular TV shows -- "Chicago Fire" and "Empire" -- produced at Cinespace Chicago Film Studios, reports WGN TV. DePaul's alliance with Cinespace is "a game changer for the city of Chicago and the greater Midwest," notes John Corba, assistant director at DePaul Cinespace Studios.

Quality, access and cost have dominated years of efforts to remake higher education, reports The Chronicle of Higher Education. Competency-based learning may be able to achieve all three of those goals, with quality being the main focus. DePaul's School for New Learning was one of the first institutions to pioneer this type of eduction by seeking to make higher education available to a growing population of adult students by using "demonstrable outcomes and measures of previously acquired learning to assess what students know."
