Update to paid sick leave guidelines
The City of Chicago passed a paid sick leave ordinance which will go into effect on July 1, 2017.
The new ordinance requires employers to accrue sick time for their employees at a rate of 1 hour of paid sick leave for every 40 hours worked. Employers who have paid sick leave policies at least as generous as the guidelines listed in the ordinance are already in compliance. This new ordinance affects some groups of employees who work at DePaul, but not all.
There are no changes to how sick time is accrued, recorded or taken for these employees:
- DePaul faculty
- Full-time staff
- Part-time exempt staff
The following employees are affected by the new ordinance. They will begin accruing paid sick time at the rate listed above - 1 hour of paid sick leave for every 40 hours worked - starting on July 1. Once accrued, these groups of employees will be able to take the paid sick time immediately, if needed:
- Part-time non-exempt employees
- Students who are paid on an hourly basis
- Temporary employees
Timesheets are being updated so that the paid sick time can be recorded in the PeopleSoft system. Additionally, employees' pay stubs will show available sick time balances starting on the July 6 paycheck. All students will receive a separate email notifying them they will be eligible to accrue and take paid sick leave. If you are a manager of any of the newly affected groups, you will need to begin planning accordingly should any of these employees need to take any paid sick time.
