Meet Paolo Mazza, New Student Service Day student coordinator
Service is a Vincentian value that is treasured by many of DePaul's students, faculty and staff. St. Vincent de Paul dedicated his life to justice by serving the poor, and DePaul's mission calls the community to continue to serve in the same way. DePaul senior and New Student Service Day student coordinator, Paolo Mazza, is one of many students who has found a deep connection to the mission and to service.
Mazza always wanted to attend DePaul because of its emphasis on service and charity. He's studying organizational communication and marketing, but he's also a student employee in the Vincentian Community Service Office, an active brother of the service fraternity Alpha Phi Omega and a member of the DePaul Activities Board. He also went on DePaul's Student Leader Vincentian Heritage Tour to sites all over France to learn about the life of St. Vincent de Paul.
"It doesn't matter what you are studying, everything you do should connect to service," Mazza says. As a student coordinator for New Student Service Day, which took place on Sept. 6, he helped students explore their purpose and offered insight on the importance of giving back. Mazza learned the importance of charity through his grandparents, who emigrated to the U.S. from Italy.
"They selflessly give to support me, my family and my community," he says.
Mazza believes it is important to be engaged and active in all aspects of his life.
"You have to reflect on each of the communities you are involved in, and understand their strengths and challenges," he says.
His service experience has had a strong impact on his life. Mazza described his recent service work at the Franciscan Outreach Kitchen in Chicago as humbling, with many different kinds of people of all ages and walks of life, gathered together. The dignity of each person in the room was evident and honored that day, he says.
"It really drove home the point that respect for everyone, every kind of person, is so important," he says. "I'm happy whenever I am able to serve, and able to charitably support DePaul's commitment to service."
